13 States and 8 Cities that require 10 Year Smoke Alarms by law (LIST)

The historical national slogan “Change your clock, change your battery,” may not apply to these households residing in states who require alarms with a 10-year battery. 13 states and 8 cities have passed legislation that requires smoke alarms that are solely battery powered to come equipped with a 10-year battery. Some states like California also require alarms to have a hush feature.
Ten-Year alarms are a small investment in the future-especially in managed properties or rental units where scheduled alarm maintenance & battery replacements are both costly & time consuming for the facilities maintenance team.
