13 States and 8 Cities that require 10 Year Smoke Alarms by law (LIST)

 (Updated: 08/09/2021)

The historical national slogan “Change your clock, change your battery,” may not apply to these households residing in states who require alarms with a 10-year battery. 13 states and 8 cities have passed legislation that requires smoke alarms that are solely battery powered to come equipped with a 10-year battery. Some states like California also require alarms to have a hush feature.

Ten-Year alarms are a small investment in the future-especially in managed properties or rental units where scheduled alarm maintenance & battery replacements are both costly & time consuming for the facilities maintenance team. On average purchasing a smoke alarm powered with a 10-Year sealed lithium power cell battery can save up to $130 in it's lifetime!

Every time I cook chicken this bad boy goes off. Can the sensitivity be reduced and how do you silence a nuisance alarm?
